ELV’s friend Helen celebrated a birthday not long ago, and asked him where she should go for a celebratory meal. Her requirements were: great food (but nothing unpronounceable), not too dressy, good service, comfortable but not stuffy surroundings, kick-ass cocktails…and chocolate.
She didn’t want sumpin’ too hi-falutin’, but did want every bite to be memorable; so our staff suggested NOBHILL (not really a) TAVERN, and even though Chef Sven Meade wasn’t in the house, his team made sure every bite was.
For the chocolate, we repaired to L’Atelier de Joel Robuchon next door for a feast of Kamel Guechida’s creations.
And it was good. Actually, everything* was great.
And our friend Helen turned 26 in style.

* The sustainable paddlefish caviar was so good we hardly miss oscetra anymore; Michael Mina’s signature lobster pot pie, while expensive ($54), is rich, seafood comfort food at its best; the steak-off between American Black Angus and A-5 Kobe from Japan was a meat education in itself; and no one in town does a better free-range chicken than the deep-fried beauty they put forth here.
Nice chardonnay for the rich pot pie. No equally worthy pairing for the beef?
The Chassagne carried us right through the meal and went surprisingly well with the beef!
That was one fantastic night my friend – and I’ve got you to thank for every delicious bite, not to mention the cocktails, of which there were, ehem, just a few. And thanks especially for the double digit deduction on my age. YOU ARE THE BEST!
Is there an ELV Birthday Club I didn’t know about? If so, sign me up (Feb 5th).
While Puligny gets all the press, I’m s sucker for Chassagne. It may be a bit more rustic, but it often carries more character. Of course, if someone is buying Montrachet, I’ll pick the body part I’ll give up.
Sounds like a great time. Thanks for sharing.
Nobhill “Tavern” has once again changed its menu and now it really is Nobhill Tavern.
I would love to know your thoughts on the latest change.
Thanks for the tip!
To rschiffman – it WAS a great time – and ELV didn’t discuss the half of it! He took my friend and I (in from Chicago for my “26th” birthday) to four different restaurants that evening – starting with cocktails at Fiamma, dinner at Nob Hill, desert at L’Atelier and tequila shots (for which ELV is known) at Diego’s to cap off the evening. I am all for ELV starting a birthday club – so sign up now!
oops – make that dessert! (those tequila shots are still with me)
