And The Correct Answer Is….

WHO IS KILLING THE GREAT CHEFS OF EUROPE, a savory and sweet whodunnit celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. This Ted Kotcheff film is a must see for anyone who fashions themselves a connoisseur of food movies.

ELV puts it right up there with Juzo Itami’s Tampopo (1985) and Ang Lee’s Eat, Drink, Man, Woman (1994) as one of the great gastronomic films of all time. (click here for one of our favorite scenes from Tampopo)

And if those scenes don’t get you hungry and slightly steamy, try this one.

There are dozens of reasons to see WIKTGCOE, not the least of which is the salivating scenery and restaurant interiors — all shot on location in London, Paris and Venice — but the performance of Robert Morley as the imperious critic Maximillian VandeVerre is the one you’ll be talking and laughing about long after the movie is over.

Fun Food Fact: Little did ELV know when he first watched WIKTGCOE in 1978 with The Food GalĀ® (Vol. 1 Ed. 1) that twenty years later he’d take the same gastronomic tour of Paris and Venice depicted in the film.

Fun Food Fact Number Two: It takes a close eye, but in one of the later scenes in Paris, two different Michelin 3-star gourmet temples are used to depict the single, fictional restaurant where one chef fakes his own death. Name the two actual restaurants (both of which are still around in Gay* Paree, though one is no longer a 3-star palace), and ELV will take you to lunch and turn his blog over to you.

Congratulations to Russell Wong for scoping out the answer with the diligence and passion for all things culinary for which he is known.

  1. I haven’t watched the movie yet but will try to spot the restaurants when I do. An interesting proposition, Mr. Curtas, but I don’t know many people with the capital (of any kind) to keep up your blog with the same frequency.

  2. Egads! I’ve never done THAT with an egg …

ELV, thank you. Thank you very much. And as Garfield would say:

    “Take me home. Feed me.”

  3. “Name the two actual restaurants (both of which are still around in Gay* Paree, though one is no longer a 3-star palace), and ELV will take you to lunch and turn his blog over to you.”

    Tour D’Argent and Maxim’s?

  4. If I’m half-right with Tour D’Argent, does that mean I qualify for second prize-half a sandwich and half a bowl of soup, at a lunch hosted by the Food Gal?
