Food For Thought-Reno 911!

Hangover got you down? Too tired or lazy to read my post on Reno restaurants a few entries below this? We understand how a night of video poker, PBR and Jager shots can do that to even the most dedicated foodie. Therefore, as a public service, we hereby offer a direct audio link to my News 88.9 FM Nevada Public Radio weekly “Food For Thought” segment.

  1. As a native Las Vegan who lived in Reno for 2 years, I can honestly say that I have seen both communities in detail. Born and raised in Las Vegas and now living here again with my family and kids, I remember when Vegas was a small town place and good restaurants were hidden and only discovered by recommendations from those in the know. Places like the Aristocrat in the Smiths shopping center on Charleston and Rancho in the 80’s, the Flame (before it burned down) and Batistas when it really was a hole in the wall were great culinary hideaways. Well, Reno, much like old Vegas, has its places too. Next time you are there, you must go to the Fourth Street Bistro on, well, none other than 4th Street (a few miles away from downtown). The culinary innovation from the owner/executive chef is nothing short of brilliant. And their wine list has a few twists and turns that would actually give a few Sommeliers from Vegas a bit of a surprise. As for good, old country nothing fancy, but great quality Italian cooking, I implore you to go to La Familgia on Second Street, just few steps from the Sienna in downtown. The gnocchi with pesto is surprisingly light, yet flavorful explosion of Italy. Both of these restaurants are highly regarded true Reno culinary establishments. Be careful, however, both are small and can get very crowded. Enjoy.

  2. Beaujolais Bistro rivals my favorite Parisian café, Café des Philosophes, for the top spot on my personal list of the best places to eat and drink. (Des Philosophes of course wins based solely on location. Their cheesecake is pretty spectacular too.) Beaujolais is by far one of the greatest places to eat in Reno. Thank you for mentioning it in your review.

I took a poll of amongst my friends and results suggest you should try: Sezmu, LuLou’s, Francis’ Asian Bistro, and Café de Thai.
