VINTNER GRILL

Vintner Grill oenophile update: beginning this week (2.20.09), VG now features 50 wines for under $50 on its list. Bravo…and some of our criticism below should be (re)considered accordingly.

We like everything about the Vintner Grill except the wine list. To our oenophilic sensibilities, it’s unfocused and strangely priced, and there’s too much going on and not enough at the same time.

There’s lots of wine from lots of countries, but look on any single page you’ll find a few bargains, precious few bottles in the $50-80 range, and then a number of big hitters that’ll set you back a least a Benjamin.

Hot Hostess Watch and Happy Chinese New Year!

Happy Chinese New Year from Connie, Cindy and Jing! They want to wish every one of you a happy and prosperous New Year in the Year of the Ox, from their hostess perch at the always amazing Ping Pang Pong.

Because of their professionalism (and the ministrations of managers Kristy and Thomas, and owners Kevin and Karrie Wu),

ELV would dine here even if the only thing they served was dried abalone and sea cucumber.

Which they happened to do last night (along with a feast of other Cantonese specialites), and everything was awesome.

Hot Hostess Watch – SPAGO

When ELV looks at Kay all he can think of is ang ganda mo ate. Because of her and her highly polished, professional hostess skills, we’d eat Chef Eric Klein’s eclectic mix of Alsatian-Austrian-Cal-Ital-fusion-food even if he cooked nothing but bad beuschel, rotten rindsuppe, and terrible tafelspitz.

And the painting she’s standing in front of, by local artist and UNLV graduate David Ryan, is a nice piece of work too.
