If Ever a Picture was Worth a Thousand Words…

This is the picture posted in the New York Times today about Paula Deen supporters lining up to support her and her restaurant in Savannah, Georgia.

We at ELV hate to get in the middle of racially sensitive issues, but there are dozens of reasons Paula Deen should lose her job at the Food Network, but being a late-middle-aged, racially-insensitive, inarticulate Southern white woman ain’t one of them.*

In case you missed it, Iron Chef America aired Battle Tilapia last night on Food Network.

ELV missed it, because no one gave him fair warning the episode was about to air. We found out at dinner at Due Forni, where they were nice enough to bump the football game for a few minutes to watch us try to treat tilapia as something trenchantly tasteful.

The episode will be repeated this coming Saturday at 5 pm.

5:00 PM ET/PT

Iron Chef Marc Forgione battles young New York-based chef Nick Curtin in Kitchen Stadium.

For the record, Marcella Ruth Schroader Curtas (d.o.b. 8.10.24 – The Official Mother of ELV) insists that we set the record straight about Mrs. Paul’s Fish Sticks. “I never served them to you,” she claims. If not, ELV has no idea where he developed such a loathing for the crispy little fishy fritters.

EATALY is Awesome…and other New York Stories

The trouble with traveling to New York is, you’re usually with people who are under the impression there are things to do there other than eat and drink. – ELV

New York is the greatest restaurant city in the world.Daniel Boulud

Everyone knows ELV hearts New York City. He’s from Connecticut, lived an hour’s drive from mid-town for five years back in the 80s, and knows the restaurant territory there almost as well as he does Las Vegas’. Amazingly, after at least a hundred trips there, he still gets a tingle whenever he’s awakened from his red-eye slumber to see the sun rising over Manhattan (“Ah, civilization!” are the words and thoughts that immediately spring to his mind.):

After checking in to the Gansevoort Hotel, smack dab in the middle of the meat-packing district, we considered polishing off our hunger at Pastis (right out our window):

Jet Tila Goes Out with a Bang

Jet Tila’s Iron Chef America viewing party at Insert Coins Sunday night provided a nice, if poignant piece of punctuation to the ending of his praiseworthy pursuits and presence in these parts.

ELV has posted a ton of stuff today — from the sad (Rosemary’s closing) to the sublime (Manon’s ham and cheese croissant) — because within minutes, he will be off like a prom dress to New York City for Friday’s taping of another episode of Iron Chef America at the Food Network studios in downtown Manhattan.

Au revoir mes amis, and be sure to follow us on Facebook and Twitter for the next four days as we eat (and judge) our way through the Big Apple!

ELV has been busy…soon to get busier

July 09, 2011 By: John Curtas Category: Food Network 1 Comment →

We’ve been a little busy lately, both as a lawyer-at-law and in preparation for another Iron Chef America taping next Friday in New York City. Which explains why there have been no new posts in the past few days.

To make it up to you, we will bombarding you with our gustatory tales and travails until next Wednesday, and then will be shutting down the site between July 14-21.

For those in desperate need for an ELV fix, we suggest following us on Twitter, as we have maxed out on friends on our Facebook page.

You’ll have to excuse us now, as we have to go figure out a way to lose fifteen pounds (and ten years of gray hair) in the next five days.

This Just In – ELV Judging Iron Chef America Tonight

January 30, 2011 By: John Curtas Category: Chefs, Critics, Events, Food, Food Network 8 Comments →

The last time we judged Iron Chef America, the Food Network folks told us a month in advance when we’d be on…setting the stage for all sorts of merriment.

Now that we’re just another mega-famous food celebrity, it seems they’re taking us for granted…and we found out about our show’s being televised just this evening…thanks to a Facebook friend (and Vanguard bartender) Dustin Drankiewicz…who probably saw the early feed from the east coast via Direct TV.

Anyhoooo….at 10:00 pm pst, on the Food Network, tonight (approx. 1 1/2 hours from now), ELV will be appearing as a judge on Iron Chef America’s Battle Passion Fruit!

The good news is Battle Passion Fruit, pitting Iron Chef Jose Garces against challenger Michael Solomonov, will be re-broadcast this coming THURSDAY at 8:00 pm EST/PST on Channel 42 in Las Vegas.

Tune in then and be prepared to see ELV in all of his white-suited, preternaturally suntanned, short-haired glory!
