Brett Ottolenghi is a serious fellow.

Unlike most guys his age, his is not a life filled with vapid encounters and trivial pursuits.

To his credit, he concerns himself with all manner of things that taste good, from small, passionate producers of premium products.

He would rather talk about snail caviar and asparagus vinegar than sports and other youthful pursuits…and gets more joy from a small-batch maple syrup than any twenty-something we know.

His retail outlet on Sunset has been going strong for some time now, but lucky for galloping gourmands everywhere, he’s decided to take his show on the road — to the Downtown 3rd Farmers Market — where his superior stuff makes a weekly appearance in its own booth.

From that booth, he serves everything from poached octopus wrapped in wasabi leaves (yes, wasabi leaves), to salumi platters worth salivating over.

He also concocts a lemon ice with candied ginger on the spot that might be the most refreshing dessert we’ve eaten at this Friday food fest.

We like to think of Ottolenghi as a proselytizer for premium products — as in, the best and most interesting food there is out there — and his warms the cockles of ELV’s heart to know that there are purveyors out there who are dedicating their economic lives to trying to make our community a better place to eat.
