If someone had dropped a bomb on Restaurant Guy Savoy last night between the hours of 6-8 pm, it would’ve set Las Vegas’ culinary destiny back twenty years. Such was the assemblage of top toques from across the valley (and from beyond the pond as well), who came to kibbitz and consume incomparable comestibles (jamon iberico de bellotta de pata negra, pumpkin soup with white truffles, oysters en gelée, Paris-Brest pastries, and two croquembouche towers of nonpareil profiteroles) and champagne in the consummate style the French do better than anyone.

ELV’s hardworking staff:

…was working so hard yesterday they plum forgot it was All Hallow’s Eve.
Which, BTW, also happens to be Nevada Day.
Sort of appropriate, huh?
Anyway, we wuz so bizy, we forgots ta dress up and wish everyone a Happy Halloween/Nevada Day.
So Happy Whatever….and we hope the slutty nurse costumes were out in force.
On the adults…not the eight year olds.
Which leads us to the question: When did adults hijack Halloween? And why?
And when will they learn that anyone over the age of twelve looks absurd in a costume?

ELV note: One of our friends in food – Artisanal Foods owner Brett Ottolenghi — is having an open house this Friday at his store on Sunset (right across from the main McCarran runway), and since we’re a big fan of canned fish (and exotic spices and award-winning olive oils), we think the event will be too good to miss. PS: a lot of other tasty products will also be featured (including exotic cocktail garnishes from an outfit called Filthy Food), as you can read about in his invitation below.

Join us this Friday, September 30th from 5:30 – 8:00pm, to meet and taste with three artisans:
Jon Zearreta from Ortiz will be sampling line caught Bonito Del Norte tuna loins, salt cured anchovy filets, and marinated boquerones. Ortiz has produced some of Spain’s highest quality preserved Mediterranean seafoods since 1891.

If we told you why he was here we’d have to kill you.* But here Alan Richman was last week and we caught up with him at D.O.C.G. (where he spent most of the meal verbally dueling with Scott Conant), and Carnevino (where he wanted to try the super-aged “riserva” steaks).
