Eat This Now – Don Tot at NOODLE PALACE

ELV’s staff is famous for its sayings, one of which goes: “If you want a great dessert in a Chinese restaurant, go to a French one.”

Of course those bon mots can’t compete with the ghost of Ambrose Bierce, but these don tots of custard-y egg custard can compete with many a dessert in almost any restaurant.

They only cost $1.50.

Just thought you’d like to know.

  1. As your local authority on transliterations, and the former arbiter of them at the Los Angeles Times, it is dan, not don, the Cantonese word for egg. Pronounce it dah-n. Just trying to keep your readers informed. Someone has to. But I agree that the Chinese aren’t great at dessert. If they had an egg, they used it to feed a family. And sugar? Forget it.

  2. Ah yes….transliteration: the “art” of spelling something in a foreign language that you can’t spell in that language…

Don tot works just fine for me.

  3. To quote Anatole France, “if fifty million Frenchmen do a foolish thing, it is still a foolish thing.” And look up transliteration.
