Sur La Table

Sur La Table (translation: “on the table”) was founded in 1972 in Seattle by Shirley Collins. It’s first location was in Seattle’s Pike’s Place Market and now has over 70 stores in the United States. Sur la Taableh is the second largest cookware chain in America (after Williams-Sonoma), and ELV and the staff at ELV think it’s the best. The reason we think it’s the best is because everytime we walk into a store, it makes us want to cook. Williams-Sonoma, on the other hand, just makes us want to look and gag at the prices. The only thing we don’t like about SLT is it’s location. No matter how you slice it, the Planet Hollywood (formerly Alladin) Shops are a pain to get to, but at least our SLT is near the parking garage, and it’s a lot closer than flying to Seattle (where ELV first experienced the charms of this franchise sixteen years ago).

  1. Another fine example of the contributions we Northwesterners have made to enhance everyone’s culinary endeavors. (James Beard, Huckleberries, Hazelnuts, and Sur La Table to name a few).

And I agree with ELV, traipsing through that darkened mall that still has the vestiges of the Alladin’s architecture is an adventure, but one I’ll endure in order to shop at Sur La Table.

I love the copper pot photo. They have some amazingly tiny little copper pots that are just perfect for individual serving vessels.

  2. Thanks. I was planning on coming down for the events. Today I gasped for breath when I saw some of the prices for the dinners. After I recover in a few days, I’ll make my reservation. Maybe I’ll visit with the ELV fan club when I come down there.

  3. The prices still make you want to gag, but I think you’ve hit the nail on the head. Somehow, you still feel like you’ve come to a place that cares about cooking. I still prefer to use the local independents when possible, but it fills an important role.
A number of years back I was looking for a good 9″ chef’s knife. I was sure I’d want to get the Global knife. I was visiting the Okanagan wine festival and stopped at this great “kitchen” store in Kelowna (when the dollar was still stong). The guy at the counter (owner) listened to me, pulled out a couple carrots and said let’s try some knives and see what you really want. In the end I got a WÜSTHOF Culinar that I’ve loved for many years.
So, what’s the gist of this comment. Would that we all had access to a place where the owners were passionate and gave a shopping experience harking back to days of yore. If you can’t get that, Sur La Table is as good as it gets.

  4. Dr – I can tell you the prices will be worth it. It’s going to be a JBF experience in Vegas – so the little extra that is attached to the dinner will be worth it – or that is what we are hoping for. And the funds support a great cause so that feels good too. Hope to see you here.
