MIX ZONE CAFE

You know there’s a mini-revolution going on in a neighborhood when a hot, hipster bar (Frankie’s Tiki Room) and a good restaurant open up just blocks away from each other in the same year. That an Asian restaurant opened in a small space in the run-down, time-worn shopping center at the corner of West Charleston and Rancho Rd. is hardly news. (There’s been a number of them come and go in the fifteen years ELV has lived nearby.) That it’s as good as the Mix Zone Cafe, is quite a surprise, however.

Lunch At LAWRY’S

Lunching at Lawry’s is kind of a weird set-up that has you shuttled into a side room by a nice hostess; then lined up cafeteria-style while she explains how you order; she then takes your order (for some items, i.e. drinks, desserts, or anything-not-being-carved-by-the-chefs-up-ahead); you wait until the line’s progress moves you directly in front of a carver; finally, you tell him which cut o’ prime rib you have a hankerin’ for.

The Fat Guy Is Coming To Vegas

…and we’re not talking about Santa Claus. On January 3rd, we’ll be giving Steven A. Shaw aka The Fat Guy, a personal guided tour of our Asian restaurants up and down Spring Mountain Road.

Shaw (founder of, and top tamale at www.egullet.org) has just published Asian Dining Rules (Harper Collins 2008), and hasn’t been in Sin City in like….forever; so the pressure is on to show the big guy a good time.
