PHO HUNG

ELV has a confession to make: He’s eaten in almost every Vietnamese restaurant in town (many of them multiple times), and he still hasn’t a clue what separates a good one from a mediocre one.*

Back in the day, we had our very own Miss Saigon (nee Hanh Le), who accompanied us around town with instructions and insights into this cuisine (most of which consisted of: “My mother makes a much better version of this…”).

Here you can hear us chattering about Pho So 1, which was our favorite hangout back in ’01 and ’02. But the little lass left town long ago, and we’ve been rudderless when it comes to these things ever since.

STRIPPED TO ITS BARE ESSENTIALS

ELV loves many things about Strip House in Planet Hollywood….not the least of which is all the eye-candy on the walls. Taking Morel’s one step further in the soft-core, steakhouse porn department, Strip House features lots of photos of lovely ladies in various stages of undress throughout the restaurant. Morel’s, as you know, prefers eight-foot paintings of gals cavorting in the buff.

BBQ Blues

ELV’s been goin’ a little ‘cue crazy lately. Which is frustrating because, next to Bangor, Maine, Las Vegas might be the worst barbecue town in America. What we get here are either franchises, or mom and pop joints doing things on the cheap. There’s no cult of ribs, sauces or brisket; precious little outdoor smoking; no pitmasters; no zealotry and no soul to the barbecued meats being sold to our chain-loving populace.
