This Just In – PIP’S in Aliante to Close

Robin Leach reported yesterday that Pip’sRino Armeni’s upscale Italian restaurant and wine bar in the Aliante Hotel and Casino — is closing, effective this Sunday.

Like many restaurants that opened at the beginning of the Great Recession, Pip’s was hamstrung by a lousy economic climate.

Its location — in the middle of Vegas’s economic implosion epicenter (North Las Vegas) — didn’t help matters either.

We feel bad for uber-wine-guy-and-super-good-guy Armeni, and will miss his smiling face and gracious presence on our restaurant scene.

Perhaps no ethnic food in America has been more denuded of its character than Greek. Every Greek restaurant has a menu so similar to every other Greek restaurant; you would swear the menus were printed en masse. Even worse is the cooking—so standardized it all tastes as if it came from a single, communal kitchen.

Times are tough. Even ELV — a man known for his carefree, spendthrift ways — is feeling the pinch. So when a restaurant opens on the Strip that is actually affordable, with good food to boot, we are deeply grateful.

When that place is the spawn of the ultimate absentee chef, calling us pleasantly surprised would be an understatement.
