Smokin’ In Mesquite – Judgin’ ‘Cue

ELV learned something last weekend in Mesquite (Nevada, not France). He learned that the KCBS-sanctioned barbecue contests are taken very seriously by the contestants, the organization, and the multitude of judges that show up to sample and rate the ‘cue.

He also learned that a lot of the competitive stuff (at least as it appeared in a parking lot in Mesquite), isn’t better or worse than the backyard stuff he’s eaten hundreds of times over the years…..and most of it isn’t in the same league as the ribs in Memphis, the pulled pork in Lexington (North Carolina, not Massachusetts), the brisket in Lockhart, TX, or tons of commercial ‘cue we’ve eaten from South Carolina to K.C..

POSTRIO Memories….like the corners of my mind

A few days ago, ELV was thinking about his first meal at the original Postrio, eighteen years ago, in San Francisco. He remembered how striking the food was — an amalgam of all that is sacred and holy about the freshness of California produce, sparkling seafood, well chosen meats and inventively presented proteins. He remembers that it was so good he staggered back to his room in the Prescott Hotel after a two and a half hour eating extravaganza that began as only wanting to grab a nibble and make it an early evening.

New York Stories

ELV note: As most of you know, ELV hearts the Big Apple. He lived just outside of it (in Danbury, CT) between 1985-1990, and never tires of its energy and its eateries. Below is a quick travelogue of our four days there last week, concentrating on — what else? — food and restaurants. Some misguided souls (like The Food GalĀ®) are under the impression there are things to do in New York City other than eat and drink, and for this they have our sympathies.
