David Clawson closed late last week after a one-year run in a hideous location; Tapas by Alex Stratta is about to close after operating for less than a year at a jinxed one. Neither news was a shock, but both closings reaffirmed long-held suspicions and have caused more than a little reflection around the Eating Las Vegas offices.

I ate Kerry Simon’s food for the first time on August 30, 1988 (in New York City), and the last time a couple of weeks ago (in Las Vegas). He was a brilliant culinary talent who could cook everything from the finest French food to the most fascinating fusion creations to the best hamburger you ever put in your mouth.

At the time, we were planning on another laudatory article highlighting a recent meal there, which would, once again, cement Bartolotta Ristorante di Mare’s reputation as not only one of the best restaurants in Las Vegas, but also as one of the greatest seafood and Italian restaurants in the country….possibly the greatest.
