A Damn Fine Cup of Coffee

The above picture is of a damn fine cup of coffee.

It is called a “flat white.”

The name “flat white” comes from Australia and New Zealand, where this combination of ristretto espresso and steamed and foamed milk was first popularized in the 1980s.

The picture above was taken at Sambalatte Torrefazione, where owner Luiz Oliveira tells us the only difference between it and a cappuccino is that the milk is foamed slightly less for the flat white, lending a smoother, silkier texture to the final product.

You know it has to be a damn fine cup of coffee, since ELV can’t resist ordering one whenever he’s at  Sambalatte — even though ELV is not a coffee drinker.

ELV used to be a coffee drinker, but his two exes drank so much of the stuff it cured him for life.

One of them needed a hot cup in her hand from almost the moment she opened her eyes in the morning. The other could do a triple espresso shot at 11:00 pm and still sleep like a baby.

Twenty years of intense caffeine-i-za-tion (and bad breath and a sour stomach) was enough for us to take the cure. And since we’re pretty nervous and high strung to begin with, we swore off a cup o’ Joe about the same time we swore off marriage (around 1999).

But every time we get within sniffing distance of Sambalatte, we are led to a flat white like a moth to a flame.

Yeah, it’s that good.

It only costs $3.75.

Just thought you’d like to know.
