JERRY’S FAMOUS COFFEE SHOP

People are always complaining to ELV by saying things like: “You’re such a snob. Why are you so elitist?” To which ELV replies: “So what’s your point?”

ELV revels in his snobbery. He embraces it. Wears it as a badge of honor. Shouts about it from the rooftops (well, at least from this website). Condescending, imperious, omniscience is his stock in trade.

But that doesn’t mean he can’t appreciate a good grilled cheese sandwich, some lemony Greek fries, and one whopper of a chocolate éclair at an iconic coffee shop every once in a while.

Truth be told, it had been a decade since last we grabbed a bite at Jerry’s Famous Coffee Shop….but we were happy to find a retro-cool modern update to the old gal, along with a lot of old faves like the aforementioned grilled cheese and fat, meaty dolmades with avgolemono sauce  (not quite as good as ELV’s yia yia’s, but Panayiotia Dalacas Cutsumpas would roll over in her grave if we said they were).

And then there is that éclair. About the size of a husky man’s forearm, it is fresh made daily, pumped full of rich buttercream, and glazed with dark, bittersweet chocolate that tells you someone in the kitchen knows how to balance their sugars. Like everything here, it is made in-house in the best Greek diner tradition. In fact, that is what this coffee shop is more than anything else — a classic, east coast diner (albeit one located in a small Nevada casino) that actually takes pride in its food.

And that’s something worth getting snobby about.

Those dolmades are $9 and the éclair is $5 and both are enough for three.

  1. Seriously, who cares wtf an “eclair” really is or isn’t. Jerry’s Coffee Shop is a yummy gem of a place; I’m craving one of their delish grilled cheese and ham sandwiches right now…

  2. We used to go there as kids. My dad got the prime rib as big as a Volvo.
I, like all 10 year olds Im sure, ate the trout…mmmm.

  3. Thanks! I’d forgotten how good Jerry’s Coffee Shop was & haven’t been there in years. I’ll have to go back soon.

Like you can’t make that at home, such technical culinary precision.

  5. I alternate between Dupars and Jerry’s when I am stuck downtown. They are the last of the great hotel-casino coffee shops.

Well I guess I coulda made one if I *was* actually at home when I wrote that! Sadly, some of us have jobs, and thus must rely on someone else to execute the ‘technical culinary precision’ of a perfect grilled cheese sandwich for lunch!

  7. Someone I work with visits your site regularly and recommended it to me to read also. The writing style is superior and the content is interesting. Thanks for the insight you provide the readers!

  8. I wish more people would write sites like this that are actually interesting to read. With all the crap floating around on the web, it is rare to read a site like yours instead.
