TERZETTO

There are many things to recommend about Terzetto….unfortunately much of the food isn’t among them.

The setting and decor (in the new M Resort and Casino) are drop dead gorgeous: floor to ceiling windows, open kitchen, comfortable booths, and dramatic views of the entire valley looking north would make this a go-to venue even if it only served a Norwegian/Cambodian buffet.

The service is as spot on as the room is breathtaking, and the wine list doesn’t assassinate your wallet like those meat emporiums ten miles to the north.

They also serve good, prime-quality beef (from M owner Tony Marnell’s family ranch), and the kitchen knows how to cook it right.

But that’s pretty much where the dazzle-factor stops.

Nothing from the apps to desserts we had — from tepid tater tots to so-so rock shrimp to paltry potatoes au gratin — struck us as anything above what you get at any chain steakhouse.

And our somewhat smallish fillet of Dover sole struck us as the real deal; it wasn’t that bad….but it wasn’t that good either. Just a simple piece of not-too-old fish that the kitchen didn’t screw up — served with a barely warm beurre blanc.

Desserts were as uninspired as those apps and sides, with the chocolate bread pudding being the clear winner over a disastrous banana cream “pie” (basically banana mush inside a hard pastry shell)….and because it’s tough to combine “chocolate” and “bread pudding” in any form that results in any kind of disaster.

That being said, its attempt at architectural impressiveness (a chocolate cone-like wafer atop ice cream atop the aforementioned bread pudding) possessed neither sophistication nor structural integrity. But it still tasted pretty darn good.

So as steakhouses go, this is a pretty good one, and a pretty one, and definitely the prettiest place to get a good looking steak between Mandalay Bay and Barstow.

Unfortunately, the rest of the food is not parading around in the same pageant.

Our meal for four including five cocktails and a $115 bottle of wine came to $400 + a $65 tip.

  1. Next time you’re at The M, try Marinelli’s. So far, I’ve found it to be the best restaurant that far south on St. Rose and perhaps the top Italian joint (other than perhaps Settebello) in all of Henderson. The bruschetta was quite tasty, and the gnocchi with gorgonzola cream sauce was love at first bite!

Oh, and try the apricot & hazelnut bread pudding for dessert. You won’t regret it!

  2. Boy, that kitchen crew needs some schooling in plating design, i.e. tater tots, ketchup, white plate. Ugh.

  3. Agreed, dr. I don’t know how that chocolate bread pudding tastes, but the look of it makes me want to vomit. The “scallop potatoes” also look weird, like someone just melted yellow cheddar cheese atop some stale mashed potatoes.

Again, Marinelli’s is probably the best option for dining at The M. Even Red Cup Cafe, the 24-hour diner, serves better food (and for a cheaper price as well) overall. Just remember that when heading that far south on St. Rose for good food.

  4. “definitely the prettiest place to get a good looking steak between Mandalay Bay and Barstow.” So are you saying the world famous Idol Spurs Steakhouse in Barstow is better?

  5. Clearly, you picked the WRONG/WORST things to try on that succulent menu!!! (who orders Dover at a Steakhouse anyway!?) :-)

I have personally eaten there about 4 times since the resort has opened and each time was equally as fantastic… My favorite appetizer/salad is the Lobster Citrus Avocado Salad…. Avocado, Grapefruit, Caramelized Vidalia Onion with a full butterflied chilled lobster tail all formed into a round mold is like a symphony of flavors exploding in your mouth!… I’ve had their rack of lamb, their filet mignon, and their scallops… all of which where phenomenal… And their best dessert is by far their Chocolate Souffle… order it with your dinner because it takes 20 minutes to get to you, but once you get it, I promise it’ll be worth it… light, fluffy, hot molten chocolate with freshly whipped cream…. YUM…

I will back everyone else up by agreeing that Marinelli’s is the best on property… (that Gnocchi and Risotto really is to DIE for!)…. But give Terzetto and Veloce another chance… order the ‘norm’ or what they consider to be their best sellers…. and you won’t be disappointed…

  6. …. forgot to add to my last posting… TATER TOTS!???… Again… who orders that in a fine dining restaurant?… Come on John… you can do better than that! :-)

  7. ELV, we’re still waiting for a review of Veloce at the top of the M. Great, great sushi in a fabulous room with a spectacular view of the valley. (Go at sunset.)

Extremely reasonable prices. If you are looking for a great sushi date spot with a quality scale somewhere between Bar Masa and I love sushi, this is the place.
