Lunch At LAWRY’S

Lunching at Lawry’s is kind of a weird set-up that has you shuttled into a side room by a nice hostess; then lined up cafeteria-style while she explains how you order; she then takes your order (for some items, i.e. drinks, desserts, or anything-not-being-carved-by-the-chefs-up-ahead); you wait until the line’s progress moves you directly in front of a carver; finally, you tell him which cut o’ prime rib you have a hankerin’ for.

He then hands you your plate of a (very lean but very tasty) corned beef sandwich, or perhaps a juicy end cut of the prime rib he’s been sawing on. You make your way to the numbered table you’ve been pre-assigned by that helpful hostess, and dig in. There’s also a condiment bar with some “salads” — potato, macaroni, cole slaw, and big bowls of pre-made horseradish and horseradish-infused whipped sour cream that taste just dandy ladled onto the meat ‘n ‘taters.

There’s also some giant, pre-wrapped, chocolate cookies atop said “bar” — “homemade!” according to the hostess. They’re not of course, but passable enough for those seeking a sugar fix to compliment their cholesterol-fest.

The whole magillicuddy will run you around $60 for two for meat that’s hard to beat.
