LOS MOLCAJETES

“Molcajetes” (mol-ka-HEY-tays) are volcanic rock mortars used by Mexican cooks to pound avocados, chiles, tomatillos, tomatoes, and spices into the coarse-grained goodies the cuisine is known for (the pestle is a tejolote.) Los Molcajetes specializes in bringing bubbling cauldrons of these to your table filled with meat, chicken and seafood (or combinations of the three). The incendiary kick from the chile sauce in those vessels tell you you’re in Taco Bell territory no longer. The lime and cilantro-scented salsa is also a winner, as are the marvelous moles and the perfect pulpos (octopus dishes). The intersection of Eastern and Owens Avenues is not exactly a place where most Summerlin socialites wish to tread, but if you have a hankerin’ for the real deal in South of the Border eats, hitch up that Hummer and get over there pronto. Be ready to drink lots of horchata or cervezas though….you’ll need them to quell the heat.

Muchos gracias to The Food Gal and her co-workers at Las Vegas Premium Outlets for finally sending ELV to a neighborhood Mexican restaurant he can recommend, both to the public at large, and his staff.

  1. I was used to eating at a similar restaurant in long beach ca. after trying out this place i was very disapointed the food was very bland service was awful and when i asked to speak to the supervisor i was told they were going to get the owner for me . The owner said no ablo inglish soi mexican laughed and walked away.

  2. One of the best mexican restaurants I have ever eaten at. The food was excellent as was the service. I can’t wait to go back.

  3. Thank you for the referral because the Molcajetes was a treat as a first time experience and the atmosphere was just like a border town in Mexico -someone vending cds, plastic baby toys, and a serenading mariachi for hire inside the restaurant. Unfortunately, this place was not packed but they displayed their best ethnic restaurant 2008 proudly on the wall.

I hope to make it further East to try your other recommendation.

  4. I LOVE IT!! Thank you for the referral, we went today to celebrate my daughter’s 18th birthday, we love the food, so yummy, and best of all cheap, it was only $16.99 for one Molcajete, my daughter and me ate a lot until we could not eat no more, and we took left overs home, only with one Molcajete, and price include drink. Best food ever, the other day we went to LAS ISLITAS 1, we did not like it at all, food was ugly, expensive, but Los Molcajetes its the best, for sure that we are going back.
